What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication is a two-step login process. In addition to your username and password, you must enter a code that you receive on an authenticator app or SMS when you log in. The purpose of this is to add an extra "layer" of security, which means that a stolen password is not enough for someone to break into your account.

The advantage of two-factor authentication is that your account is better protected. The downside is that the login process will take a bit longer, since you need to enter a code in addition to your username and password. It’s up to you whether you want to turn on two-factor authentication for your account or not. We highly recommend it.

How do I enable two-factor authentication?

To enable two-factor authentication for your Jottacloud account, go to www.jottacloud.com/web/secure. You will have two options for how to set up the authentication - with app or SMS.  We recommend using app as it is more reliable, and you will have recovery codes if you lose access to your app or phone.

Enable two-factor authentication using an app

Before selecting app as your 2-factor authenticator you have to download an authenticator app if you have not done it before. We recommend the following apps as they support backup of your authentication codes: Authy, 1Password, or LastPass Authenticator

Once you've downloaded an authenticator app, select app as your 2-factor authenticator. The next step is your recovery codes. Make sure to save your recovery codes by either downloading or copy them. If the app is lost, these codes are the only way to log in to your account.

Once you have saved the recovery codes, we will ask you to scan a QR-code with your authenticator app. If you for some reason can’t scan the QR-code, you can use a one-time code. After scanning the QR-code, or using a one-time code, you will see a six-digit code in your app. Enter the code on the webpage to activate. Once this is done, two-factor authentication is enabled for your account.

Enable two-factor authentication using SMS

After selecting SMS as your 2-factor authenticator you have to verify your password to proceed. Once you've done this, you will be asked to enter your mobile number if you have not saved it before. We will ask you to verify your mobile number by sending you a verification code on SMS that you must enter. Once this is done, two-factor authentication is enabled for your account.

How does it work?

After turning on two-factor authentication, you will be prompted for a six-digit code in addition to your username and password at each login.

The code will automatically be generated to your app or be sent as a SMS, once you have entered your username and password.
