Backing up an External Drive

How to back up an external hard drive with the desktop application.

Updated over a week ago

Backing up your hard drive is just as simple as backing up any other folder on your computer. Backup of an external drive can be done through Backups and Archive in the desktop app.

Back up through Backups

The Backup feature is ideal for users who need their files to be updated automatically. Here's how you can use it:

  1. Open the desktop application.

  2. Navigate to "Files" and then select "Backup."

  3. Click the "Add Folder" button and select your external drive.

Once added, the application will automatically back up the contents of the external drive to the cloud. Any changes made to the files locally will be reflected in the backup as long as the drive is connected to your computer. This ensures that your data is always up-to-date.

Back up through Archive

The Archive feature is suitable for users who want a static backup of their files:

  1. Open the desktop application.

  2. Navigate to "Files" and then select "Archive."

  3. Click the "Upload folder" button and choose your external drive.

Unlike the Backup method, files in the Archive are not automatically updated. They will remain unchanged unless you manually upload a new version. This method is ideal for archiving data that does not change frequently.

Important Considerations

  • Disconnected Drives: When the external drive is disconnected, it may not appear in the backup devices list. However, the backed-up content will remain available on the website.

  • Reconnecting Drives: If you chose Backup to upload the data from the external drive, remember that the drive needs to be connected to the computer to continue scanning and uploading data. Please remeber to reconnect the drive often. That way you will have an updated backup.
